Private Number Plates

Private number plates are slowly becoming more and more of a common sight on our roads. But, what are the costs of private number plates, are they worth the investment, and what kind of number plate combinations are you legally allowed?

Why are private number plates so popular?

People’s cars are their pride and joy, and are essentially an extension of their personality. Private number plates add to signifying that personality, and add that extra bit of personalisation to the person's car. That’s why, often, private number plates will be someone's nickname or even birthday.

It also helps your car to stand out from the crowd, you haven’t just got a generic number plate like everyone else on the road.

How much does a private number plate cost?

Some private number plates start in the low hundreds, with others going into the thousands. How much a number plate costs depends on a lot of factors, including how long it’s been available for, how much interest it’s already had,  and even if it has a really unique combination of letters and numbers or not.

One of the most expensive number plates ever to be sold was ‘25 O’, which sold in 2014 for an astonishing price of nearly £520,000.

You can use the DVLA personalised registrations website to search for private number plate combinations, and see how much they’ll cost.

Something to note is that when you buy a private number plate, it’s assigned to the vehicle, and not the person who bought it. So, you need to bear in mind that if you want to transfer your unique registration if you switch cars, there will be a transfer fee attached too.

Are private number plates worth it?

Whether private number plates are worth it is completely subjective and depends on the person. If you want to add uniqueness to your vehicle, and you consider it important to have your vehicle stand out and be more personal, then yes it’ll be worth the investment.

How valuable are private number plates?

This depends on the type of private plate you buy. Higher value number plates are usually ones that are searched for less, and so lower in demand. If there are lots of private number plates on the market similar to yours, and able to be bought in many variations, they are likely to be worth less.
