Car of the Month: Ford Focus

At this point, the Ford Focus is a household name alongside the Ford Fiesta and the Volkswagen Golf. But is it the perfect family car, or does it fall short? In this review, we’ll take a look at the Focus’ strengths and weaknesses.

How does it feel to drive?

The Focus will please most drivers in how it moves. For the best handling, you’ll want to select either the ST-Line or the ST-Line Vignale trims, as they have a lower and stiffer suspension which prevents the car’s body from leaning into corners during turns.

Overall, it’s a comfortable driving experience thanks to the Ecoboost engine, which was designed to be more efficient to give a less demanding drive.

Is it a practical choice?

The Focus, like many hatchbacks, was considered the optimum family car as it has the compact size and practicality that suited the needs of the everyday family. However, the popularity of SUVs and crossover vehicles indicates they are no longer the firm choice.

SUVs and crossover vehicles offer increased space and the practicality of the driving position being raised over the tyres. They also undergo rigorous testing due to their size, making them a safer option.

But that doesn’t mean that you should disregard the Focus altogether. The Active trim feels more like an SUV, with an increased ride height and a rougher road suspension.

Does it make for an affordable family car?

Because there are several trims available, the price point for the Focus ranges from £24,829 to £37,435, so it’s best to choose the trim that suits your driving style.

The majority of trims have a decent MPG. If it’s a big focus for you, then one of the mHEV versions might be worth considering. If you don’t want to sacrifice performance, the mHEV ST-Line offers 54.3 MPG and 155 BHP for £30,610.

At the lowest end of the spectrum, the 1.0 EcoBoost Titanium 5dr is available for £24,829, and the 1L petrol engine has a decent fuel consumption of 52.3MPG. At the top of the spectrum, you have the 2.3 EcoBoost ST 5dr Auto, a hot hatch with a 2.5L petrol engine, 35.8 MPG and 280 BHP for £37,435.
