Which Used Car Is Right For Me? - Volkswagen Golf vs Ford Focus
There’s no denying that these two hatchbacks are iconic. Both are excellent choices if practicality and affordability are deciding factors, but does one come out better on top?

A brief history of the VW Golf
Introduced almost 50 years ago, the Golf was the successor of the popular Beetle. Instead of sticking to the iconic round shape, Volkswagen opted for a more angular design and swapped out the air-cooled rear engine for a water-cooled front engine.
The harsh angular body would soften with the fifth-gen Golf, released in 2003. This model included rear-side airbags, four-link rear suspension, a rain sensor and a panoramic sunroof.
Notable mentions from the most recent seventh generation are the introduction of EV and PHEV options. It’s also 100kg lighter, and the engine consumes 23% less fuel.
A brief history of the Ford Focus
In comparison, the Ford Focus has only been around for 24 years, with its initial release in 1998. Like the Golf, it was also replacing a much-loved model - the Escort. The build quality, handling and level of equipment made it an instant success, earning it the Car of the Year Award in 1999.
While on the outside, the second and third-gen Focus might not have differed too far from the first generation, the engines and interiors were a different story. Both generations featured a much larger boot and offered more economical engines to cater better to families.
As of 2018, the fourth-generation Focus continues to build on the staples of economical engines while sharpening the design and adding improved safety features.

Interior
When comparing the interiors of the newer models, the standout difference is Volkswagen’s choice to remove dials from the cabin. This change might be a shock to some drivers, but the inclusion of a large touchscreen display should make it easier for them to get used to.
The dashboard in the latest Focus has a more intuitive design, there are buttons, dials, and a touchscreen display. Both cars have to Apply CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity, as well as cruise control, air con and sat nav.
Practicality
Both entry-level models are the same sizes in cabin and boot space, making them great family cars and perfect for road trips and weekend getaways. If you’re after a more SUV-like vehicle, then the Ford Focus Active range might be the car for you. It incorporates a higher driving position and a rough road suspension for increased handling and control.
Which is best to drive?
For drivers who want a more exciting drive, the ST-Line from Ford and the GTI and R-Line from Volkswagen are sporty cars with firmer suspensions and bigger wheels to result in a more challenging drive.
Both Golf and Focus have a range of models available from petrol, diesel, hybrid and fully electric so drivers can choose the engine option for them.
